BREAKING NEWS: Axton man dies in wreck

Thursday, February 20, 2014

An Axton man died as the result of an auto accident Wednesday evening in Pittsylvania County, according to the Virginia State Police.

Julio Francisco Alvarez Martinez, 22, of Axton, was pronounced dead at the scene on Route 41, half a mile south of Route 750 in Pittsylvania County, according to a state police news release.

The preliminary investigation revealed that around 5 p.m., a 1995 Toyota Corolla was traveling southbound on Route 41 when it allegedly crossed the center line and collided with a 1997 Dodge Intrepid head on, according to the release.

Alvarez was driving the Corolla, the release stated. It added that he was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Intrepid, Destiny C. Mease, 27, of Roanoke, and two passengers in her vehicle were injured in the accident and taken to an area hospital for treatment, according to the release.

No further information was available Thursday regarding the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing, the release stated.
