All-County Chorus concert is Saturday

Henry County Public Schools’ All-County Chorus will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Magna Vista High School, according to a program from the school division.

Christina W. Elkins is guest director of the Junior All-County Chors and Mary Ann Peak is accompanist. Frank Williams is guest director of the Senior All-County Chorus and Sharon Wigington is accompanist.

Elkins is a choral conductor and educator from Greensboro, N.C. She has conducted various choirs and taught in numerous educational settings throughout the Triad.

Throughout her 18 years in education, Elkins has taught PK – collegiate classes, including music history, voice lessons, diction, choral music education and piano lessons. Her teaching has taken her to various schools in the state, including Greensboro Day School, N.C. A&T State University, UNC-Greensboro, and most recently High Point University.

She is the choir director at Grace United Methodist Church, where she leads the Chancel Choir, handbells and children’s music programs. She also is the musical director for Upper School shows at Greensboro Day School.

Williams, now retired, was a choral music teacher in the public schools of Gaston and Charlotte-Mecklenburg counties in North Carolina before becoming an instructor, department head and assistant dean of visual and performing arts at Central Piedmont Community College.

In 1996, he moved to Durham, N.C., where he served as an assistant professor of music, director of choral activities and department head at North Carolina Central University until his retirement from North Carolina in 2002. After retirement, he moved to Richmond, where he became the instructional specialist for fine arts and the coordinator of the Arts and Humanities Center.

He has conducted the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Salt Lake City, Utah; The Charlotte Contemporary Ensemble; the CIAA Intercollegiate Music Choir; One Voice Chorus, Richmond; and North Carolina Central University Choirs. He has compositions published with GIA in Chicago, Ill.

He has also conducted All City and All County Choirs in North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina and Baltimore, Md., and has served as an adjudicator in North and South Carolina, Virginia and Kansas City, Mo. He also has served as director of music at the Friendship Baptist Church, Charlotte; Ebenezer Baptist and Moore Street Baptist, Richmond; White Rock Baptist, Durham; and Mt Hebron Baptist Church, Gastonia.

Junior All-County choral music selections will be taken from: “Born to Be Somebody,” arr. by Taylor; “Can You Hear,” Jim Papoulis; “Come to Me, O My Love,” Alan Petker; “Kyrie,” Vicki T. Courtney; “Never Seek to Tell Thy Love,” Sherri Porterfield.

Senior All-County choral music selections will be taken from: “America,” arr. by Fettke; “Dreams,” Rollo Dillworth; “Let Everything That Hath Breath,” Jeffery Ames; “Slap That Bass,” arr. by Shackley; “Your Voices Tune,” Handel/Michaels.
