When Brantley Eanes sat in the parking lot at work scratching his lottery ticket on March 18, he had no idea it was a $1 million winner.
“I looked at it and saw the second number,” and thought it showed a million dollars, said Eanes, of Martinsville. Without his glasses, he couldn’t be sure. After scratching the third number, “I could see” the same amount, he said.
Excited, he called his wife, Rhonda, to tell her the good news.
But she didn’t immediately believe him, Eanes said.
“She kept saying ‘No, you didn’t. No, you didn’t,’” Eanes recalled, chuckling.
Eanes said he had been on his way to his job as an electronic technician when he stopped at On the Run on Church Street and bought a $52 Million Cash Spectacular Scratcher ticket from the Virginia Lottery. He discovered it was a winner after pulling into the parking lot.
“It was hard to work that night,” he laughed, explaining that he only worked a portion of his 12-hour shift on the night he bought the winning ticket.
Eanes claimed the prize Friday in Roanoke. He had the choice of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $681,000 before taxes. He chose the cash option.
The store received a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
He said he hopes to use his prize to pay bills and save for retirement.
Eanes is the second $1 million winner in the $52 Million Cash Spectacular, which features prizes ranging from $10 up to $1 million. As the name suggests, the game has a total of $52 million in prizes available. Four top-prize tickets remain unclaimed.
