Carr to challenge Griffith for 9th District House seat
Monday, March 31, 2014
A Patrick County resident announced Friday that he will challenge 9th District U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith in the November election.
William Carr, 69, of Ararat, said he will file as an independent in May.
Griffith, R-Salem, has not said whether he will seek re-election but has hinted that he will.
Carr said he first opposed Griffith in the 2010 GOP primary for the 9th District.
In his current bid, Carr said, he will run as an independent because he “does not believe the Republican Party will allow anyone to challenge Griffith in a fair race in the Republican primary,” according to a release. Carr believes that the Republican Party is working to eliminate true conservatives from winning any race,” the release added.
A retired businessman, Carr lives in the Ararat community with his wife, Vanessa. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University and has four children and six grandchildren. He is a Christian, has served as a bishop and is a frequent speaker at conservative rallies throughout Southwest Virginia, he said.
