A Collinsville man was charged Tuesday in connection with the alleged robbery of a local convenience store.

Shawn Michael Rice, 23, of 290 Miles Road, was charged with robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with the March 29 incident at Fas Mart #110 on Brookdale Street, according to a release from the Martinsville Police Department.

Video surveillance at the store showed a white man, at least 6 feet tall, of small build and with short brown hair, wore a red shirt to cover his face when the alleged robbery occurred, authorities have said.

The man allegedly produced a handgun and demanded money from the cash register before allegedly taking an undisclosed amount of cash and fleeing on foot towards Spruce Street, authorities have said.

On Monday, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations relayed information about the armed robbery to the Martinsville Police Department’s Investigation Division. That information led to the identification of a suspect.

An arrest was made after additional investigation, according to the release.

Rice was found Tuesday in the Park Street area of Martinsville, the release stated. He was arrested without incident by members of the Martinsville Police Department and Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations.

As a result of the arrest, Rice also was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to the release.
