Tuesday, May 6, 2014
By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -
Two North Carolina men have been arrested in connection with a home invasion in Patrick County, according to a news release from Patrick Sheriff Dan Smith.
Coty Reid Donahue, 21, of 1402 Morron St., Madison, N.C., and John Baxter Puckett, 24, of 7260 N.C. Highway 704, also in Madison, are being held in the Rockingham County (N.C.) Jail on fugitive of justice warrants, the release said. Warrants have been issued in Patrick County against both men on charges of attempted armed robbery, according to Smith.
The men were charged in connection with an incident April 29 in which two masked men, one allegedly armed with a rifle, entered a Patrick County home and demanded pain medications from the occupant, the release said.
“One of the men (allegedly) pointed a rifle at the occupant’s 10-year-old daughter, and a threat (allegedly) was made that she would be killed unless the men received pain pills,” the release said.
The occupant told the intruders there were no pain medications in the house, and one of them searched the premises while the other allegedly held the gun on the girl, said the release.
“After no pain medications were found, the men left,” the release said. “Fortunately, no one was physically harmed.”
On Friday, Patrick County investigators executed a search warrant at a home in Madison, where they discovered cocaine, an indoor marijuana growing operation, drug paraphernalia, property stolen in a recent Madison incident and items that allegedly linked a man at the residence to the Patrick County incident, the release said.
A second search was conducted early Saturday at a home in Rockingham County, the release said. Items recovered there, including a rifle, allegedly linked a second man to the incident, it said.
Both men allegedly confessed, according to the release.
Lead investigators on the case were Danny Martin and Roger Bell, and Deputy Winfred Hill was the first at the scene at of the home invasion, Smith said.
Smith thanked the officers of the Mayodan Police Department, the Madison Police Department and the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office for providing many hours of assistance to his office.
Donahue and Puckett are in the process of being extradited to Virginia, the release said.
