Runners in Saturday’s Trout N About 5.5k race are going to get wet.

The race will include a stretch that crosses the Smith River. Krista Hodges of the Dan River Basin Association (DRBA), sponsor of the race, said the depth of the river where runners will enter it is about 2 feet, and it gets more shallow as they cross until it is as little as 6 inches deep.

A rope will be stretched across the river for safety purposes, Hodges said, adding that runners do not need to know how to swim.

DRBA’s website suggests that participants consider wearing older running shoes.

The race will begin at the Fieldale Trailhead at 3521 South River Road, Fieldale, at 10 a.m. Saturday. Packets of information will be distributed to participants between 8:30 and 9:45 that morning, and registration also can be completed at that time.

Registration will cost $25, and the proceeds will support DRBA’s Trout in the Classroom program in Southern Virginia and Rockingham County, N.C.

The race will follow the Fieldale and Textile Heritage trails and is open to runners and walkers of all ages, according to information on DRBA’s website.

The race is on a trail and may not be suitable for road runners, the website states. Also, part of it is on private property so participants cannot pre-run it because the property owner has given permission to use the site only on Saturday, according to the website.

Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female finishers, top overall masters and three deep in the following age categories: 10 and younger, 11-15, 16-19, 20 –29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and older.
