Big M recipients list activities, plans for future

Martinsville High School Big M Trophy recipients provided the following information:

• Cassidy Mychal Agee, the daughter of Mike and Ginger Agee, is a student at Piedmont Governor’s School. She is a member of HOSA, CHILL, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society and Youth Leadership Development. She works at King’s Academy Daycare and will attend Lynchburg College in the fall, majoring in nursing.

• Wesley Tyler Allen is the son of Ginger Williams. He participated in cross country his sophomore and senior years, and marching band his freshman and sophomore years. He has been presiding secretary of the Interact Club, Western Regional president of Jobs for Virginia Graduates, MHS Student Council Association secretary, president of the MHS National Technical Honor Society, and member of the National Honor Society and National Beta Club. He participates in the ACE program and dual enrollment through Patrick Henry Community College, from which he will get an associate degree in general studies on Saturday.

He plans to attend PHCC for the next two academic years and then transfer to a Virginia four-year institute to major in business management or marketing and minor in European marketing or business administration.

• Stuart Beard, son of Dr. James Beard and Laura Chiudioni, is a member of the marching band and the robotics team. He attended Piedmont Governor’s School. He will attend Virginia Tech to pursue a degree in engineering.

• Ashleigh Elizabeth Buck is the daughter of SFC Joseph Buck Jr. and Lorrie Buck. She participated in the MAVAHI Marching Band, concert band and MHS jazz band; was captain of the MHS varsity girls swim team for the 2013-14 season and the Literature SCAEL team; and a member of the tennis team, Senior Beta Club, Key Club and the National Honor Society. She has received a Big “M” award since the fifth grade and was awarded the Superintendent’s List this year.

Along with graduating from MHS, she will graduate from Piedmont Governor’s School and receive an associate degree from PHCC. In the fall, she will attending Texas A&M University-Galveston, where she plans to study marine biology.

• Jesus Carrillo Llamas is the son of Jose Carrillo and Yolanda Llamas Vidal. Jesus played soccer in his ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade years. He has earned the Big M every year since ninth grade. He plans to attend PHCC to pursue a degree in engineering and then transfer to Virginia Tech for a bachelor’s degree.

• Tajuana Carter, the daughter of Issac and Sharon Carter, attends New College Institute, where she participates in Academy of Engineering and Technology. She has been a Girl Scout since third grade and intends to be a lifetime Scout. Her other activities and organizations include National Honor Society; Youth Leadership Development; Health Occupation Students of America; parliamentarian of the senior class; Future Business Leaders of America; Upward Bound Math & Science; cheerleading; and soccer. She has worked for Chick-Fil-A and Subway and completed more than 100 hours of community service while in high school. In the fall, she will attend Virginia Commonwealth University, majoring in biomedical engineering.

• Jordan Michaela Cochran, the daughter of Michael and Nancy Cochran, has been a member of the marching, concert and jazz bands. She also has been in Key Club, Senior Beta Club, CHILL, Upward Bound and SPCA volunteer. She has been a Big M recipient every year since fifth grade and recently was named to the Superintendent’s List.

She will attend Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C., to major in biology and continue her music studies. Upon graduating from LR, she will apply to attend N.C. State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine to specialize in the care of large animals.

• Kelsey Mareva Connor is the daughter of Timothy and Stacy Connor. Her school activities include: varsity soccer, captain of varsity soccer, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, SCA treasurer, Senior Beta, Key Club, marching band, JVG, concert band and yearbook staff. She works at her family’s restaurant, Fenderz Drive-in, and baby-sits, and she has played travel soccer for the PYSL Hurricanes for the past four years. She plans to attend Radford University’s College of Business and Economics to pursue an MBA in business management and entrepreneurship.

• Guadalupe Corona, the daughter of David and Blanca Corona, is a member of the marching band, Key Club, CHILL, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, BETA Club and the Piedmont Governor’s School. She will attend James Madison University to study nursing.

• Virginia Crabtree is the daughter of Dr. Mark and Rebecca Crabtree. She was a member of the concert band and marching band, where she was the drum major this year. She is a member of Key Club, Beta Club, National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society; has been on the tennis team since freshman year; and has been dancing for 15 years. She attends Piedmont Governor’s School and is receiving an associate degree in science through PHCC. She will attend the University of Virginia in the fall.

• Kiana Kamil Dillard, the daughter of Vincent and Wyvette Dillard, attends Piedmont Governor’s School and has a 4.2 GPA. She is a certified nurse aide; a Girl Scout for 12 years; sings in the Parkway Summit Community Gospel Choir; and is active in school and community activities, including: MHS National Honor Society, MHS National Technical Honor Society, MHS HOSA, MHS Beta, Youth Leadership, National Society of Black Engineers and CHILL. She will attend George Mason University, majoring in psychology.

• Samantha “Sami” Lyn Easley, the daughter of Duke and Deb Easley, participates in Key Club, is a member of the tennis team, and is a member of the Bulldog Marching Band, where she is drum major. She is a member of National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Beta and Piedmont Governor’s School. She will attend Virginia Tech to pursue a degree in psychology.

• K’Lecia Alexis Fountain, the daughter of Kerry and Felicia Fountain, was a part of several clubs and organizations such as: Academy of Engineering and Technology; marching band; concert band; HOSA; INTERACT; 2013 spring musical, “DreamGirls”; Upward Bound; and FBLA. She has been active in Student Council since the ninth grade and held various leadership positions. At her church she is in the Youth Choir, Ensemble Choir and the Usher Board. She will attend Radford University and majoring in nursing.

• Brittany Renee’ Gill is the daughter of Catrina Gill and granddaughter of Leon and Gaye Gill. She was drum major for the MHS Marching Band, which she has been a part of for four years. She was president of FBLA and INTERACT; HOSA reporter; a CHILL board member; member of the National Society of High School Scholars, National Honor Society, National Senior Beta Club and Key Club; vice president of the National Technical Honor Society; and a RELATE leader. She was selected for Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges of 2014 at Patrick Henry Community College. She will attend James Madison University in the fall as either a health sciences or kinesiology major.

• Elizabeth Hannah LaPrade is the daughter of Cindy and Dean LaPrade. She participated in marching band, jazz band and tennis team and is a member of National Honor Society, Senior Beta Club and Key Club. She has received the Big M Certificate every year since fifth grade and recently has been awarded Superintendent’s List. She attends Piedmont Governor’s School. Through dual enrollment classes, she will graduate from PHCC with an associate degree in science. She is an active member of Starling Avenue Baptist Youth Group. She will attend James Madison University to study nursing.

• Courtney Lawson, the daughter of Darrel and Becky Lawson and Leslie Beale of Millington, Tenn., is a member of National Honor Society, Senior Beta, Key Club and HOSA. She will attend Radford University to pursue an undergraduate degree in interior design and a graduate degree in architecture.

• Margaret Lovell is the daughter of Jeff and Lisa Lovell. She is going to graduate from the ACE Academy and is receiving an associate degree in general studies. She has been a member of the varsity girls soccer team since freshman year and is a member of National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society and Senior Beta. She will attend PHCC where she will be part of the Patriots soccer team and major in early education.

• Helen Martin is the daughter of Montrecia and Terry Martin. She has a 4.3 GPA and attends the Piedmont Governor’s School. She has been a member of the MHS softball team for four years and has served as team captain. She played on the Bulldog basketball team her sophomore and senior years. She is a member of the Mavahi Marching Band and was the clarinet section leader this year. She is a member of CHILL, FBLA, NSBE, National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. She will attend the University of Virginia to major in psychology and later enroll in law school.

• Marnié Janie Martin, the daughter of Marvin and Bonnie Martin Sr., is the senior class president and the senior representative on the Martinsville School Board. She was the junior class president and the junior representative on the school board. She is a member of the National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, the National Society of Black Engineers, Communities Helping Improve Local Lives and Future Business Leaders of America; membership chairman of Interact Club; and co-historian of Health Occupation Students of America. She was a cheerleader for junior varsity and varsity football and basketball. She attends Bethel United Way of the Cross Church, where she is a member of its Praise Dance Ministry. She will attend Hampton University to major in pharmacy. She has received $80,000 in scholarships from Hampton University.

• Brooke Danielle Mason, the daughter of April Mason and the late Jamie Mason, maintained a 4.0 GPA and has been a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Beta, HOSA and CHILL. She was on the Superintendent’s List and received the Edelen Spirit Award. She has participated in the MAVAHI Marching Band, section leader her junior and senior years, jazz band, concert band and softball captain senior year. She will attend PHCC with a focus on early childhood education or criminal justice. She has the opportunity to play on the PHCC Lady Patriots softball team.

• Travis Maxey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Maxey, will attend PHCC to pursue an associate of science degree in motorsports technology. He has been in the dual enrollment class of motorsports technology through MHS and PHCC for the past two years. He has participated in Boy Scouts, is a member of First United Methodist Church your group and was a member of the MHS robotics team.

• Erika Millner, the daughter of Victor and Barbara Millner, attends Piedmont Governor’s School and has a 4.3 GPA. She is a member of FBLA, NSBE, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Beta Club and Girl Scouts. She participates in CHILL, HOSA, Youth Leadership Development and Big Sister Mentor program. She will attend the University of Virginia, majoring in biology on a pre-med track.

• Andrew Tyler Mize is the son of Ramie and Joy Mize. He has participated in various clubs and societies, such as National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Senior Beta Club and Key Club. He has played four years of varsity soccer, ran cross country and played on the golf team. He participated in t he ACE program and will graduate from PHCC on Saturday with an associate degree in general studies. He has been awarded Superintendent’s List and will graduate with honors, and he has completed the requirements to earn the rank of Eagle Scout in June. He will attend James Madison University to study finance.

• Emmye Elizabeth Myers is the daughter of John Myers and Kerielea Byrd. She is a member of National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Senior Beta, CHILL and HOSA, where she served as vice president senior year. She was awarded Superintendent’s List as well this year. She is a youth group member at Rich Acres Christian Church, is a team member at Chick-Fil-A and volunteers in the community. She will attend James Madison University to study business.

• Thomas Jordan O’Neil is the son of Scott and Bethany O’Neil. He has a 4.2 GPA and several other honors. He has participated in varsity cross country, swim team and soccer and went to the state championships in both cross country and swim. He is a varsity soccer captain and was chosen for the Wendy’s Heisman Award this year. He is a member of Beta Club, Key Club, National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. He will attend James Madison University to major in chemistry in hopes of going to medical school.

• Abby Ozbun is the daughter of Todd and Regina Ozbun. Her awards and activities include: Superintendent’s List; National Honor Society; National Technical Honor Society; other honors; varsity soccer the past three years and a captain this spring; member of the marching band in ninth, 11th and 12th grades; and football and basketball varsity cheerleading this year. She will attend PHCC in the fall and plans to transfer to a school in the South. She plans to major in math.

• Michael Allen Sexton is the son of Valerie Barnes and grandson of Bobby and Phyllis Barnes. He has been a marching band member for four years; jazz band member for 2013-2014 academic year; member of the Literature and Math SCAEL teams for four years; and founder of the SOCIAL club. He plans to attend PHCC with the Patrick Henry Scholars scholarship as well as with aid from the R.G. Atkins Scholarship trust fund, for arts and science. He plans to attend Shenandoah University in Winchester to major in pharmacy and music performance.

• Carrie Shoemaker, the daughter of Pam Shoemaker and the niece of Tim Gauldin, has been a part of varsity football cheerleader for three years, along with being captain her senior year and a part of varsity basketball cheerleading for two years. She is a part of CHILL, RELATE, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Senior Beta and Youth Leadership. She has been involved with yearbook for the past two years and was the editor this year. She is graduating from the ACE program with a degree in general studies and is a member of Upward Bound. She a nominee for the D.A.R. and has received Big M since fifth grade. She will major in health sciences at James Madison University.

• Nyomi Tarpley, the daughter of Wyoming and Melissa Tarpley, has been an SCA officer and a member of National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, CHILL, RELATE, Beta, varsity cheerleader, president of the local HOSA chapter, MHS varsity golf. She got a scholarship in her junior year for the certified nurse’s aide program at PHCC and was licensed by the state in 2013. She has been working at Blue Ridge Rehab Center since 2012. She plans to go to Lynchburg College in the fall and major in nursing.

• Austin White is the son of Melissa and Eddie White. He will attend James Madison University in the fall. He has been a swimmer and golfer. He made state finals in swimming his junior and senior years, finishing in the top 15 each time with his top finish being a third place this past season. He served as captain of both the golf and swim teams his senior year. He works at Chatmoss Country Club golf shop.

• De’Jah Williams is the daughter of Tara Lipford and Harvey Williams Jr. She has been a member of JV and varsity cheerleading squads. She served three years in HOSA and was parliamentarian this year; is a member of National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society; and has been a class representative for two years. She received her nurse aide license this year, and she participates in the ACE program through PHCC, from which she will graduate Saturday. She plans to attend James Madison University to major in nursing and participate in the pre-physician’s assistant program.

• Tristan Wooldridge is the daughter of Vivian Anderson and Michael Wooldridge. She is a graduate of the ACE Academy and will graduate with an associate degree in general studies. She has participated in HOSA, swim team, Beta, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, varsity soccer and has received the Big M certificate since sixth grade. She will attend PHCC to pursue an associate degree in nursing. She plans to attend the University of Virginia to pursue a bachelor’s degree, then master’s degree in nursing.
