Celebration 2014: More hours, rides

Sunday, May 18, 2014

The 16th annual Independence Day Celebration at Martinsville Speedway will offer more carnival rides and expanded hours for the rides and entertainment.

Celebration 2014, scheduled for Thursday, July 3, will begin at 3 p.m. this year when the carnival rides will open. There will be 14 rides this year, the most ever, with three major rides added.

The entertainment portion of Celebration also will begin earlier this year, starting at 4 p.m. The bands will be announced in the next several weeks.

The event also will include the area’s largest fireworks display, which will begin around 10 p.m.

“We believe Celebration is about family and kids, and that is what we are concentrating on this year,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “Above all else, we want to make sure the children have the most fun possible. We’re still going to have great bands, but we are putting more resources toward the carnival area.”

The carnival rides will include: Tempest, Paratrooper, Rock-O-Plane, Way-Out Swing, Helicopter Ride, Lovely Lady Bugs, Hampton Motorcycle Ride, Thomas the Train, Super Slide, Moser Drop Zone, Merry-Go-Round, Frolic, Super Trucks and Hog Drop.

Celebration 2014 will be free to the public, with the cost of the event covered by donations from almost 40 area businesses, non-profits and local government. It is a non-alcoholic event with concessions available.

“It always amazes how this community comes together to make sure Celebration happens every year,” said Jeb Bassett, in his sixth year as lead fundraiser for the event. “Celebration has become part of our community tradition here in Martinsville and Henry County, and it is something we all should be very proud of.”

Bassett added that several new sponsors were added this year.

Sponsors for Celebration 2014 include: American Global Logistics, Ameristaff, Applied Felts, Bassett Furniture, Bassett Office Supply, BB&T, Blue Ridge Aquaculture, Brad Parker Insurance Agency — Nationwide Insurance, Carter Bank & Trust, Chamber’s Partnership for Economic Growth, city of Martinsville, Collinsville Printing, Commonwealth Laminating, Cool Knobs and Pulls, Dillon Insurance, First Piedmont, Eastman, Frith Construction, Henry County, Hooker Furniture, Martinsville DuPont Credit Union, Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce, Martinsville Speedway, Martinsville Speedway Children’s Foundation, Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, Nelson Automotive, RTI Martinsville, River Community Bank, Shenandoah Furniture, Southwestern Virginia Gas, Stanley Furniture, Steve Martin Trenching, TR Properties, Taco Bell, Tarheel Paper and Supply Co., The Lester Group, Virginia Mirror, West Window and Zenith Logistics.
