A construction crew worked Wednesday to demolish the former JCPenney (later JC’s 5-Star Outlet) building at Liberty Fair Mall.

The mall’s owner, the Hull Storey Gibson Companies, plans to convert the enclosed shopping center into a so-called “strip mall” in which stores’ entrances open to the outside instead of an interior hall.

On Wednesday night, people visiting the mall took photos as the demolition progressed.

Coles Hull, a spokesman for Hull Storey Gibson, did not return a phone call for comment. However, she has said the company is committed to rejuvenating the mall in a way that it will remain the area’s main shopping destination.
