Sandra Wesley had an unexpected — and unwelcome — guest at her home on Sunday.
A black bear weighing 200 pounds or more walked up to the fence a few feet from the front porch of her home on Third Street in Martinsville around 1:30 p.m., she said Tuesday.
Wesley was sitting on the porch with her brother, Johnny Eccles, when the bear walked up.
“At first, I thought it was a big dog, and my brother said it was a bear,” she said.
Third Street is a residential area, Wesley said, with a wooded area some distance behind the homes. Generally, the yard that the bear came through to get to hers is full of children, but Wesley said they probably were at church at that time Sunday.
The bear didn’t stick around long.
“We spooked him when we screamed because he ran right up the street,” Wesley said.
A police car came up the street about the same time, and Wesley said she told the officers about the bear. She said she thinks the officers saw the bear, and they circled around the neighborhood a few times.
But by then, the bear had moved on.
