He survived battle of Iwo Jima in WWII

Shelton Scales, a retired Marine Corps colonel who survived the battle on Iwo Jima during World War II, died Tuesday.
Scales, 97, lived in Kings Grant Retirement Community.
A native of Sandy Ridge, N.C., he enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 1940. He was a commanding officer of the 3rd Batallion, 23rd Marines on Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, 1945, and was awarded the Legion of Merit medal for that campaign.
Scales was placed on the retired reserve list and promoted to colonel in April 1958.
He worked in the insurance field until he retired on May 1, 1982.
