Council rejects raising chickens in city
Tuesday, July 22, 2014
Martinsville City Council on Tuesday turned down a measure that would have allowed chickens to be raised in the city.
Council did not vote on the proposed rules. Rather, the members said their decision was based on public opposition and concern that enforcement would drain the city’s resources.
The Martinsville Planning Commission recently voted to send proposed rules for allowing chickens in the city on to the council for consideration, but it did not endorse them. The premise was that if the council decided to allow chickens, some rules would be needed.
Under the rules, people wanting to keep chickens would have had to apply for a special use permit, which would have been considered by the planning commission and the city council following public hearings. The fee was to have been $200.
