Smith River Trout Unlimited (SRTU) held its annual Smith River cleanup on Saturday.
About a dozen SRTU members as well as volunteers and lovers of the river from as far as Fredericksburg assembled at the base of Philpott Dam for the cleanup. They cleaned the river downstream of the dam to the bottom of the large field behind a mirror factory. The area included the road which runs along the river and all obvious fishing trails going down to the water.
The cleanup began at 8:30 a.m. Some participants donned waders to pull trash from the river. Others fanned out along the road and paths. There also was a designated truck which picked up full bags and served as resupply point for fresh bags and cold water.
At 1 p.m. everyone reassembled at the base of the dam for hamburgers and hot dogs. Those present discussed about how the Smith River could again become a “destination trout fishery.”
