Mother indicted in death
Tuesday, July 29, 2014
By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -
A Martinsville woman has been indicted on felony murder and two other charges, according to indictments released Monday by a Martinsville grand jury.
Dominique Lanier Martin, 21, of 765 Indian Trail, Martinsville, was indicted on two charges of abuse and neglect of children and one charge of felony murder, all in connection with a Nov. 18 incident.
According to previous Bulletin reports, Martin’s daughter, Aah Layah Martin, 5, died Nov. 18 about an hour after city police officers received a call at 7:05 a.m. that day of two unresponsive children on Dunlap Street.
The second child, who was 2 years old, survived.
On Monday, city Commonwealth’s Attorney Clay Gravely explained the felony murder charge.
“We are alleging that ... felonious conduct created the circumstances that led to her daughter’s death. In particular, that was creating an environment where there (allegedly) were illegal drugs and prescription drugs that did not belong to her (Martin) which the daughter ended up consuming,” he said.
An indictment is not an indication of guilt. It is a grand jury’s determination that enough evidence exists to hold a trial.
