Rain won’t stop festival

Friday, August 8, 2014

The seventh annual Smith River Fest will be held Saturday, rain or shine.

Roger Adams, director of Henry County Parks and Recreation, and Jennifer Doss, tourism director with the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corp., both sponsors of the day-long festival, said it will go on as planned.

However, the starting times for races, such as the river race, the Helgramite Hustle 5K Mud Run and the Martinsville Speedway Blue Ridge Duck Race 5000, could be adjusted if there is hazardous weather such as thunderstorms, Adams and Doss said.

Doss emphasized that all events will be held.

The festival will begin at 9 a.m. at the Smith River Sports Complex in Axton and will include such outdoor experiences as stand-up paddleboard and casting demonstrations, a guided canoe/kayak ride, bicycle ride and more. Entertainment and food also will be part of the event.

There is a 100 percent chance of showers on Saturday with light southeast winds and a high of 70 expected, according to the National Weather Service.
