All ducks have been ‘adopted’

Friday, August 8, 2014

Two days before the 2014 Inaugural Blue Ridge Duck Race will be held at Smith RiverFest on Saturday, all the ducks had been “adopted.”

Six thousand “adopted” rubber ducks will be dumped into the Smith River via dump truck from the U.S. 58 Bypass near the Smith River Sports Complex at 1 p.m. Saturday. The ducks will race down the river to the finish line trap at the Smith RiverFest Landing.

The “adoptive parent” of the first-place duck will receive a $2,500 grand prize. The second-place prize is $1,000, and the third-place prize is $500.

The race is a fund-raiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge. It is being presented by the Martinsville Speedway.

“This is one of those great problems to have when you’re trying to get as many ducks adopted as possible,” said Blue Ridge Duck Race Co-chair Cathie Carter. “We ordered 5,000 ducks and we had to go back this week and order an additional 1,000. Schematics just don’t allow us time to continue to adopt ducks and get all the ‘adoptive parent’ info entered into the system and tagged before the race.

“So sorry we are unable to accommodate last-minute duck adoptions but we’ve been at this since the first of June. We sincerely thank all those who have helped us exceed our goal of 5,000. Our Boys and Girls Clubs kids and teens will benefit greatly because of this generosity. Hopefully those who wanted to adopt a duck will consider a donation to the clubs,” she added.

Boys and Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge advocates the academic success, good character, citizenship and healthy lifestyle of every child who comes through its doors in Henry County and Martinsville. To become a friend and volunteer or donate, call the clubs at 656-1711.

In addition to the Martinsville Speedway, duck race sponsors include Memorial Hospital in Martinsville; Autos by Nelson; SunTrust; WDBJ7; Hooker Furniture; The Lester Group; Taco Bell; Rosy-Billed Lady Pochards; Frith Construction; Bassett Furniture; Eastman; Collinsville Printing; Checkered Flag Sports; Young, Haskins, Mann, Gregory, McGarry & Wall PC; Piedmont Urology Associates; and 37 East.
