BREAKING NEWS: Bassett man dies after Saturday crash
Sunday, August 31, 2014
A Bassett man died after a Saturday evening vehicle crash in Henry County.
According to news releases from the Virginia State Police and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, a preliminary investigation revealed that a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica, allegedly operated by Ernest Brian Brodie, 42, of 120 Spruce Pine Lane, Bassett, was being pursued by Henry County Sheriff’s Office deputies after an attempted traffic stop.
The vehicle was traveling southbound on Blackberry Road in Bassett, about a half-mile south of Virginia 780 when deputies backed off the pursuit. A short time later, the releases added, deputies found the vehicle had run off the right side of the road and struck a tree.
Deputies immediately began efforts to extricate Brodie from the van, and were assisted by members of the Bassett Volunteer Fire Department and Henry County Public Safety, according to the releases. After Brodie was removed from the vehicle, he was transported to Memorial Hospital in Martinsville where he was pronounced dead a short time later, the releases added.
Brodie was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash. The Virginia State Police accident reconstruction team assisted in the initial investigation.
Evidence was seized from the van at the scene that will be sent to the state lab for narcotics testing, the county release stated.
The investigation is continuing.
