Georgia Pacific is laying off 60
Tuesday, March 6, 2007
By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -
Reduced demand for its products is prompting Georgia-Pacific Corrugated in the Martinsville Industrial Park to lay off about one-third of its employees, according to a company official.
The plant, formerly known as J & J Corrugated, is laying off about 60 of its 178 employees and returning to two full shifts of production, Plant Manager Bob Quigley said.
Quigley attributed the layoffs to "a shrink in demand" by companies within a 500-mile radius of Martinsville for containers made by the plant.
About 35 people have been laid off since the layoffs began Feb. 19, said Quigley. He said the remaining layoffs should occur by April 17.
"It may be sooner," he said, adding that it depends on how soon orders already received from customers are filled.
Quigley said Georgia-Pacific is working with the Virginia Employment Commission to try to help displaced employees find new jobs.
