Tobacco commission reforms supported
By three area commission members


Three area members of the tobacco commission support — at least for the most part — legislation aimed at holding the panel more accountable.

Bills before the General Assembly contain “good business practices” that “probably should have been done all along,” said Don Merricks of Pittsylania County, a member of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission who served in the House of Delegates from 2008 to 2014.

Artists chosen for mural

Two area artists have been selected to paint an outdoor mural to improve the appearance of a small park in uptown Martinsville.

Aleen Wilson and Amanda Honore’ Donley were chosen by a committee of city employees, artists and other area representatives that reviewed four proposals for the mural, said city Community Planner Susan McCulloch.
