Funds sought for jail study
Draper asks for $30K to examine overcrowding

Inmate overcrowding is prompting Martinsville Sheriff Steve Draper to seek $30,000 from the city in the coming fiscal year to study jail space needs.

He made his request during a Martinsville City Council budget work session Thursday night. The Community Based Corrections Plan will be considered for funding, along with many other capital projects sought by city department heads, as part of budgeting for the new fiscal year that will start July 1.

County students display their talents

It was a big night Thursday for sisters Katie and Hannah Miner. Both of their schools chose their artworks to be in Henry County Public Schools’ student art exhibition.

In all, more than 400 pieces of artwork were selected from as many students from all of the schools in the division.

The student art was put on display in the lobby on the first floor of the county administration building on Tuesday, and a reception was held Thursday night. The exhibition will be taken down after school on Wednesday.

Pastor begins club for students
Bible-centered group offered at elementary schools

A local pastor who unsuccessfully pressed the Martinsville school system to allow Bibles to be distributed in schools has begun leading an after-school Bible-centered club at both city elementary schools.

When an accident happens, every second counts, and a properly marked home address could mean the difference between life and death.

The Martinsville-Henry County E911 Communications Center, Henry County Public Safety and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office have come together to create an initiative to inform area residents if their home address numbers are in need of maintenance.
