County schools' SOL scores mixed

Compared with its 2012-13 pass rates, Henry County Public Schools’ 2013-14 Standards of Learning (SOL) pass rates increased on 13 of 33 measures, declined on 17 and stayed the same on three, according to data on the Virginia Department of Education website.

HCPS 2013-14 pass rates exceeded Virginia’s rates on eight measures, trailed the state rates on 21 measures and equaled the state rates on four measures.

Compared with its 2012-13 pass rates, Martinsville City Public Schools’ 2013-14 Standards of Learning (SOL) pass rates increased on eight measures, declined on 23 measures and stayed the same on one, according to data on the Virginia Department of Education website.

MCPS’ 2013-14 pass rates equaled Virginia’s pass rates on two measures and trailed Virginia’s pass rates on 30 measures.

For the family of Kim Hopkins, answers have not been easy to come by.

Hopkins, 57, was injured in a motorcycle-pickup collision on Saturday and died later that day at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

However, Hopkins’ family was not notified of his death until Monday.

Nuisance process hastened

Martinsville officials have reduced by more than half the amount of time it takes them to probe and resolve property upkeep issues such as high grass and inoperative vehicles.

As part of streamlining efforts to handle property nuisance issues, violation notices now are immediately posted on doors of offending properties instead of the city mailing letters to property owners and waiting for responses, said city Fire Marshal/Building Official Ted Anderson.
