Woods found guilty
Of second-degree murder, two other charges

Testifying in his own defense Tuesday, Lamont Anthony Woods said he was afraid for his life and in the process of running away when he fired the 10 shots that killed Lamar Shonta Ward two and a half years ago.

“He raises his gun and that’s when I just started shooting and running toward the woods,” Woods said, recounting the events outside his Figsboro home on April 28, 2012.

Warrants issued in robberies

Warrants have been issued for a Martinsville man in connection with two robberies early Tuesday.

Two felony warrants for robbery and two felony warrants for use of a firearm during the commission of a felony have been issued in Henry County for the arrest of David Michael Martin, 32, of 222 Moss St., Martinsville, according to a Henry County Sheriff’s Office news release.

About 125 people attended the dedication of a custom designed, specially adapted “smart home” for triple amputee former Marine Cpl. J.B. Kerns on Tuesday in Ararat.

Kerns, who served as a combat engineer, was on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan in April 2011 when he lost both legs and his right arm and sustained severe injuries from an improvised explosive device (IED).

Board nixes demolition of ex-rectory

The Martinsville Architectural Review Board (ARB) on Tuesday denied Christ Episcopal Church permission to tear down its historic former rectory.

In a unanimous vote among four board members who were at the meeting, the ARB refused to grant a “certificate of appropriateness” that would have let the church demolish the Charles C. Fishburne House at 325 E. Church St.
