Bassett man charged with attempted murder

A Bassett man has been charged with four felonies, including attempted murder and abduction, after a domestic incident early this morning.

Bobby Mckinley Branch, 61, of Elf Trail in Bassett, was charged with attempted murder, abduction with the intent to defile, discharge a firearm within an occupied dwelling and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to a Henry County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Motorists urged to use caution today
Roads may be icy

Be careful when driving this morning because cold temperatures following Thursday’s rain could cause moisture on local roads to freeze.

On Thursday, the National Weather Service expected most of the rain would be out of the area by late afternoon, but there was a small chance of rain — and perhaps a little snow — through the night. Overnight temperatures were expected to drop to around 18 degrees, well below the freezing point of 32, the forecast showed.

PHILADELPHIA — A late winter storm blanketed the Northeast on Thursday after zipping across much of the South, leaving hundreds of drivers stranded on highways in Kentucky and thousands without power in West Virginia.

By midday Thursday, a strong cold front moving across the eastern U.S. had dumped more than 20 inches of snow on parts of Kentucky, and conditions worsened in the Northeast as snow started to pile up, reaching nearly 9.5 inches and counting in the northern Maryland community of Millers by midafternoon.

Henry County Circuit Court clerk to retire
Helmstutler makes announcement

Henry County Circuit Court Clerk Vickie Helmstutler announced Thursday that she will retire at the end of her current term of office.

The current term for Helmstutler, 61, will expire Dec. 31. At that date, she will have served in the clerk’s office for 40 years, according to a news release.

First Mustangs beer festival set in April

The Martinsville Mustangs and Rooster Walk Inc. have teamed up to host the first Ballpark Beer Fest at Hooker Field on April 18.

The festival will celebrate craft beers from around the Southeast and Virginia, according to a news release from the Mustangs. More than 50 beers will be available for sampling, and live music will be performed.

Patrick County clerk to seek re-election

Patrick County Circuit Court Clerk Susan Gasperini will seek re-election to a fourth term, she announced this week.

Gasperini began working in the clerk’s office in 1982 and first won the position in a special election in 1990 to fill an unexpired term of her predecessor, David Hanby. She subsequently was re-elected to three eight-year terms.
