Survey ranks localities by health
City, county near bottom in Virginia

Arlington County is the healthiest county in Virginia while Tazewell County is at the bottom of the list, according to an annual report on the health of the nation’s counties and municipalities.

The report ranked Martinsville and Henry County, as well as some other localities in the region, near the bottom of the barrel in Virginia. Franklin County and Pittsylvania County fared significantly higher.

Details shared about proposed academies

A program that will move fifth-graders to a school-within-a-school at Martinsville Middle and another that would provide a site for certain high school students who are trying to catch up are part of the city schools’ effort to help all students graduate college-and-career ready.

That is according to the school board’s proposed budget for 2015-16 and school division officials.

Thomas Henry Carter isn’t a name mentioned with the likes of Ezra Pound, Ray Bradbury or T.S. Eliot, and many people don’t know how this Martinsville native managed to correspond and interact with these famous literary figures.

To explore these and other unanswered questions, and to unearth the short but vibrant life of this young literary giant, Carter’s special collection at Patrick Henry Community College will move to his alma mater, Washington and Lee University in Lexington, where he graduated in 1954.

Chancellor seeks business input
DuBois meets with local leaders at PHCC

A state official on Wednesday sought local assistance in figuring out how community colleges can best help businesses meet their workforce needs.

Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Chancellor Glenn DuBois met with roughly 50 local business people, educators and government officials while visiting Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC).
