The General Assembly is considering former Martinsville commonwealth’s attorney Joan Ziglar for a Danville-based general district court judgeship.

Ziglar was one of four candidates interviewed during a joint session of the House and Senate Courts of Justice Committees on Wednesday, said state Sen. Bill Stanley, R-Glade Hill, who is on the Senate’s courts committee.

A new shell building at Patriot Centre at Beaver Creek officially is on the market.

A ribbon-cutting was held Wednesday at the lot 8 shell building, located at 1320 Beaver Creek Drive in the industrial park. Speakers included Henry County Administrator Tim Hall, Henry County Board of Supervisors Chairman H.G. Vaughn and Martinsville Mayor Kim Adkins.

Congress grudgingly OKs arms for Syrian rebels

WASHINGTON — The Republican-controlled House voted grudgingly Wednesday to give the administration authority to train and arm Syrian rebels as President Barack Obama emphasized anew that American forces “do not and will not have a combat mission” in the struggle against Islamic State militants in either Iraq or Syria.
