Mall to get a new name

Goodbye, Liberty Fair Mall. Hello, The Village of Martinsville.

The latter will become the mall’s new name as it is turned into a traditional shopping center, according to Coles Doyle, marketing director for the mall’s owner, the Hull Storey Gibson Companies of Augusta, Ga.

The shopping center will transition to its new name as improvements are made to its main entrance and parking areas, Doyle said.

Audit prompts charges
Former rescue squad member indicted

A former Ridgeway District Volunteer Rescue Squad volunteer was among the people indicted Monday by a Henry County grand jury, according to a news release from the squad.

Squad President Darren Lockridge said the volunteer is Susan Smith.

According to court records, Susan Denise Smith, 44, of 246 Country Haven Drive, Ridgeway, was indicted on three counts embezzlement (grand larceny) between June 6, 2012, and Feb. 20, 2013; April 11, 2013, and Sept. 18, 2013; and Jan. 1 and May 16.

Fair draws 200 job-seekers

About 200 people attended a job fair Wednesday in which an estimated 75 jobs were available.

That’s according to Shelira Morrison, the experiential/job placement coordinator at Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC), where the job fair was held. Morrison organized the event.

Shelly Gravely’s co-workers at Support To Eliminate Poverty (STEP) Inc. in Stuart spent part of Wednesday making yellow ribbons in her honor.

Meanwhile, authorities combed another 75 miles of road in Patrick County as they searched for signs of the missing woman.

The Martinsville-Henry County Christmas Parade goes off without a hitch each year, but the process leading up to it can be “organized chaos,” according to parade committee President Kathy Lawson.

Lawson and her husband, Ralph Lawson, who is treasurer of the committee, have helped organize the parade since 1992 and 1993, respectively.
