Several people still being sought in drug investigation

All indictments related to a recent joint drug operation in Henry County have been unsealed, according to a news release from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

Man shot in county
On injured in incident at Dutch Inn/Quality Inn

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information about a shooting early Sunday in the parking lot of the Quality Inn/Dutch Inn in Collinsville.

According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, the Martinsville/Henry County 911 Center received a call about the shooting at about 1:18 a.m. Sunday. Deputies who arrived on scene were unable to locate a victim.

Water safety program for first-graders expands

What began last school year as a pilot program to teach first-graders from two Henry County schools and Carlisle School swimming and water safety lessons has been expanded to include all first-graders in Henry County Public Schools and continues the program for Carlisle.

And Martinsville City Public Schools is “on board” for its first-graders to participate as well, said April Haynes, director of the Martinsville Area Community Foundation, which is providing funding for the “Learn to Swim” program.

The Stoneleigh Estate is expected to be sold at auction Saturday, and interest is strong, with prospective buyers both within and outside the United States, according to broker and auctioneer Thomas McInnis.

McInnis was at the mansion — home of former governor Thomas B. Stanley — at 375 Edgewood Drive, Stanleytown, on Monday for an open house. The sale, conducted by Iron Horse Auction of Rockingham, N.C., will be at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Missing student case has no direct effects at NCI, PHCC

Officials with Patrick Henry Community College and New College Institute said they haven’t seen any obvious impacts at their campuses following the high-profile case of a student who went missing earlier this month at the University of Virginia.

“We operate at a pretty high security,” said Gary Dove, PHCC’s chief of police/emergency planning coordinator. “We have random patrols on campus, especially night hours when classes are letting out.”
