RICHMOND (AP) — Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell wrote a long, forlorn email to his wife three years ago trying to save his marriage, calling her his “soulmate,” yet he also said he grew so weary of her yelling that he began taking refuge in his office late at night rather than go home.

McDonnell testified extensively about his troubled marriage Thursday at his public corruption trial. He and his wife Maureen are charged with accepting more than $165,000 in gifts and loans from former Star Scientific Inc. CEO Jonnie Williams in exchange for promoting his company’s dietary supplements.

VMNH board to tap leader

A Martinsville-area native is in line to become the next chairwoman of the Virginia Museum of Natural History’s board when it meets Saturday.

Christina Draper, a University of Richmond administrator who is vice chair of the museum’s board of trustees, has agreed to accept the board’s top seat, said museum Deputy Director Ryan Barber. The board must elect Draper to the post, he said, but he does not foresee any obstacles.

The board will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the museum on Starling Avenue, Martinsville.

A group from Villa Heights Baptist Church recently helped conduct a vacation Bible school for three churches in Cuba and visited elderly residents of an assisted living facility there.

One highlight of the trip for the Rev. Keith Spangenberg, pastor of Villa Heights Baptist, was “to see the joy they have in worship. (It’s) a separation from what they go through day by day, a refuge, a time of gathering together to worship.”

Team notes changes in Cuba in six years of mission trips

Villa Heights Baptist Church has sent a mission team to Cuba off and on for about six years, according to the church’s pastor, the Rev. Keith Spangenberg, who said he has seen some changes there during that time.

Teams went annually from about 2005-07 and 2012-14; the latest trip was July 14-22.
