Students look back on time with school board

Serving on the Martinsville School Board has been an opportunity for learning, leadership and service for student representatives Armonti Rountree and Lauren O’Neil.

“It was a great experience,” said Rountree, a Martinsville High School graduating senior. “I’d recommend it to anybody who would like to be on the school board and learn the process that goes on in meetings.” He has served on the board for two years.

Board to mull funds for replacement voting machines

The Henry County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider an appropriation and contract to purchase new voting machines for the county.

In April, the Virginia Board of Elections decertified all WinVote-brand voting machines in use in the state, requiring Henry County to replace all of its voting machines.

After testing various options, the Henry County Electoral Board has asked that the supervisors award a $259,000 contract to Hart InterCivic, Inc. of Austin, Texas, to buy new voting equipment.

Dentist hired for community clinic

Dr. Amanda Meade likely will feel at home when she becomes the new full-time dentist at the Community Dental Clinic in Martinsville in July.

Meade worked at the clinic when she was a student in the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry. That experience is one reason she chose to join the clinic in July.
