Schools aim to encourage interest in reading, writing

Henry County elementary school students are getting extra time to focus on independent reading and writing this school year.

All of the county’s 10 elementary schools have implemented The Daily 5 in the primary grades. The Daily 5 is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing and working independently.

Another hostage now under threat

LONDON (AP) — Now it’s Britain’s turn to mourn.

British aid worker David Haines has been beheaded — like two American journalists before him — and the Islamic State group is threatening to kill a fourth captive.

A grisly video released by the group showing Haines’ body both mocks the West and raises the pressure on Western leaders. It concludes with a death threat against British hostage Alan Henning, shown in the same kind of orange jumpsuit the other three were wearing when they were killed.

Prime Minister David Cameron praised the 44-year-old Haines on Sunday as a British hero, and his family asked that he be remembered for devoting his life to helping civilians caught in deadly conflicts.

A new shell building at Patriot Centre at Beaver Creek industrial park should help generate business interest in the area, according to Henry County Administrator Tim Hall.

A dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the lot 8 shell building at 1320 Beaver Creek Drive, Martinsville, will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
