By PAUL COLLINS - Staff Writer

Children at a summer book-sharing event Tuesday at Patrick Henry Elementary School were asked to imagine they were inside a submarine and what they would see looking outside.

It was one of the activities to help make the book “The Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester” by Barbara O’Connor come alive for the children.

Here’s a portion of the blog Sommer Reading’s synopsis of the book: “Owen Jester lives in Carter, Georgia and at the beginning of the book he has caught a big bullfrog that he decides to name Tooley Graham. But that’s just the beginning. Soon after catching Tooley, Owen hears the sound of something falling off a train which turns out to be a submarine — the Water Wonder 4000 … and Owen can’t wait to share his secret with his two best friends. Of course, the boys want to put the submarine in the water, but when Owen’s nosy neighbor, Viola, learns what they are up to, she wants to be part of their plans.”

Clinic funds boost outlook

The Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation of Martinsville has completed a shaky financial year with strong results.

The foundation operates the Community Dental Clinic in uptown Martinsville. Since the clinic opened in 2006, it has provided more than $6.1 million in dental services to the unemployed or uninsured adults and children in Martinsville and Henry County. There have been 26,502 patient visits during that time.

Income for the fiscal year which ended June 30 was $458,165.10, an increase of about $45,716 because of the support of The Harvest Foundation and the community.

Fees from patients totaled $216,023.36, yet dental services were valued at $987,869 for the year, said Dr. Mark Crabtree, president of the foundation.

Sales tax 'holiday' signals school year
By DOUG POWELL - Staff Writer

Schools in Henry County and Martinsville will start the new school year Aug. 11, and the Virginia Department of Taxation is helping consumers get ready.

Starting Friday, the “School Supplies and Clothing” sales tax holiday — one of three sales tax holidays in Virginia each year — will begin. It will continue through Sunday.

According to the Department of Taxation’s website, purchases of qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax — 5.3 percent of the cost of price — this year.

Retailers may choose to absorb the tax on other items, but they are responsible for paying the tax on those items, the department website adds.

Voters now required to show photo ID

A new voter identification law that took effect July 1 means now is the time for any Virginia voter who does not have an acceptable form of photo ID to get one — and local registrars can help.

The new state law requires all voters who cast ballots in person at the polls to show an acceptable form of photo identification, such as a driver’s license, passport or other government-issued photo ID. Documents that do not show a photo of the voter will no longer be acceptable identification at the polls.

Martinsville Registrar Cindy Barbour does not believe many local voters will be affected by the requirement because most people already have some sort of photo identification.
