17 arrested in drug probe
Total of 32 indicted in undercover operation

A joint drug operation in Henry County resulted in 94 felony and four misdemeanor state criminal charges being issued on 32 adults.

Indictments were issued Monday as a result of the drug operation; 17 of those indicted were arrested Thursday, according to a news release from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. Fifteen people still are being sought under sealed indictments on 53 felonies and one misdemeanor, it stated.

Gear will allow police to handle meth cleanup

A trailer containing specialized safety gear and equipment will allow Henry County Sheriff’s Office deputies to safely and efficiently clean sites where crystal methamphetamine has been manufactured.

According to Henry County Sheriff Lane Perry, the highly addictive drug generally is found in one of two forms locally: pre-made, known as “Mexican ice,” which generally comes from meth super-labs in Mexico, and “shake and bake” meth, which is produced locally.

Virginia General Assembly meets on Medicaid

RICHMOND (AP) — There was plenty of talking but little action Thursday as Virginia state lawmakers held special session to discuss whether the state’s Medicaid program should expand.

Judge’s slot left unfilled

No decision was made Thursday on filling a Danville-based general district court judgeship, according to Del. Danny Marshall, R-Danville.

Former Martinsville commonwealth’s attorney Joan Ziglar is one of four people being considered for the position. The others are Danville Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Adams Jr., Danville lawyer Sandra Chinn-Gilstrap and Franklin County lawyer A.J. Dudley.

City planners: Tower is backed

A telecommunications tower planned in Martinsville will pose no danger to nearby homes if it falls, according to a city official.

GCS Electronics & Communications wants to install the approximately 100-foot-high tower outside the firm’s headquarters at 200 Sellers St. The tower would be a microwave link with another tower in Spencer, said Assistant City Manager/Community Development Director Wayne Knox.
