Work is under way to finish the widening of Liberty Street (Virginia 174) in Martinsville to four lanes from near York Street north to the city limits. Leon Towarnicki, interim city manager and public works director, said he expects the project to be completed in the spring. Widening is being done solely on the left side of the highway, and all demolition expected for the project has been done, according to Towarnicki and Assistant Public Works Director Jeff Joyce. The roughly $7.8 million project includes about $2.4 million in federal stimulus funds. The city is paying about $108,000, and the Virginia Department of Transportation is paying the rest.
