About 25 people took part in Sunday’s CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) walk starting at Broad Street Christian Church in Martinsville. About $1,200 was raised, with more contributions expected, according to the Rev. Philip Curran, pastor of Broad Street, who organized the walk. Seventy-five percent of the money will go to Church World Service, an ecumenical effort, and the rest will go to Grace Network to help the needy locally, he said. Members of Broad Street, Christ Episcopal and Chatham Heights Baptist churches as well as the Martinsville Center of Al-Islam took part. “I think it’s important that all faiths are involved in ending hunger,” Curran said. “No religion has the market on compassion.” The event concluded with Curran reading from the Bible and Imam James Shabazz of the center reading from the Qur’an.
