Sweet tradition
Friends gather to make molasses
By KIM BARTO - Bulletin Staff Writer
Making homemade molasses is not for late sleepers.
Before the sun came up on a recent Friday morning, a group of friends gathered at Cecil and Karen Smith’s home in Sanville to make molasses the old-fashioned way. It has been a yearly autumn tradition for the Smiths since the late 1980s, and the process takes all day.

State cuts: Support program to close
By PAUL COLLINS - Bulletin Staff Writer
All 11 sites in Virginia for the adult probation and parole day reporting program — including the one serving Henry County, Martinsville and Patrick County — are being eliminated under the budget cuts announced Thursday by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.
Four full-time employees of the local program will lose their jobs, as well as, presumably, two employees of Piedmont Community Services who work with the day reporting program, said Bill Spencer, chief probation and parole officer for the district.

| BHS: Students learn from each other |
By BETH MARSHALL -
The day had been long enough already, and it could only get longer. As I treaded the lonely walk from lunch, I ran into my English teacher.
“Beth, I was just looking for you,” she stated. A feeling mixed with both anticipation and dread crept into my brain. The feelings, however, quickly dissipated as my teacher offered an opportunity that ultimately inspired and even changed preconceived ideas I had always held.
