Claude Marshall Newton of Greensboro and formerly of the Axton area, passed away peacefully at his home on March 23, 2013.
He was born on July 23, 1927, to Harvey and Elizabeth Newton, who preceded him in death.?
He was a Navy Seal during World War II and was awaded a Purple Heart.
He was also an avid blood donor with the American Red Cross. During his years as a Boy Scout Master, he received the Scout Master Key and was a member of the Brotherhood of the Order of the Arrow. He was also an active member of Guilford Baptist Church.
Mr. Newton was a truck mechanic by profession having worked as a lead mechanic and shop foreman. During his career, he worked for M & M Tank Line, Old Dominion Freight Line, and retired from Sanders Truck Line. In his retirement, he continued to work at Greensboro Auto Auction.?
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 64 years, Rena Barrow Newton; daughters, Cynthia Newton and Deborah Newton-Duke (Larry) and son, Brian Wes Newton (Teresa);
grandchildren, Joanna Holder (Joel), Yvonne Frank, Everett Duke, Tiffany Duke Graves (Kobie), and Zebulon Newton (Liz). Also remaining are Mr. Newton’s five great-grandsons: Xavier Duke, Nathaniel Holder, Zechariah Duke-Graves, Zan- der Graves, and Elias Barnett; a brother, Leroy Newton (Frances) of Albemarle, NC,? and a sister, Daphne Jarrett of Martinsville, VA.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Pullen and a son, Larry Douglas Newton.
Services will take place on Wednesday,? March 27, 2013 at 11:00am,?at Guilford Baptist Church, 5904 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27409. Visitation will be held in the church parlor starting at 10:00am before the services
