Josephine Woody Hairston, 86, departed this life on Sunday, March 31, 2013 at Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart, VA. She was born in Roanoke, VA on July 22, 1926, to the late Eva Woody Jones. She was raised in Franklin County where she attended True Vine School and was a member of True Vine Baptist Church. She left Franklin County as an adult to live in Ridgeway, VA where she married Robert Brown Hairston and became a member of the New Light Missionary Baptist Church. She became involved in various organizations throughout Martinsville and Henry County. She was active with the area Boy Scouts of America. She spearheaded the local Home Demonstration Club and other programs. She also worked at DuPont plant, Martinsville and Moorefield Laundry. She later moved to Phoenix, Arizona where she spent her last days traveling until her health began to fail her.
Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Hairston; a son, Roger Lee Hairston; a daughter, Brenda Norris Hairston and a godson, Ephriam S. Jones. Those left to rejoice her memories are her foster daughter, Lula B. Hairston Jones (Lawrence E. Jones) of Martinsville, VA; god-daughter, Juandalynn J. Jones-Hunt (Bruce W. Hunt) and god-grandson, Kai C. Hunt of Greensboro, NC; a sister, Mary Muse of Glade Hill, VA; two sisters-in-law, Claire N. Hairston and Almeda S. Hairston of Martinsville, VA; two nieces and a host of other devoted relatives and friends. Visitation will be at Hines Funeral Home Thursday, April 4, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Interment will be at Phoenix Memorial Park in Phoenix, Arizona.
