Jerry William “JW” Gilbert, 75, of Fieldale, died Friday, April 5, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Henry County on February 1, 1938 to the late Hoyte Itaska Gilbert and Helen Lee Joyce Gilbert.

He was retired after thirty-five years with Fieldcrest Mills and after forty-four years with the Henry County Public School where he worked with Maintenance and Grounds.

Jerry was a member of the Fieldale Volunteer Fire Department for thirty-five years and twenty eight of those years he served as the department’s Chief. Jerry was a member of the Fieldale Rescue and also Fieldale Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of fifty-six years, Betty Susan Hatcher Gilbert of the home, two daughters, Sharon Paige Gilbert and Charlene Gilbert Smith both of Fieldale and one son, James (Jay) William Gilbert of Fieldale, one sister, Virginia Gilbert Smith of Pensacola, Florida and two brothers, Hoyte Douglas Gilbert and James (Eddie) Gilbert both of Fieldale and six grandchildren, Timothy Itaska Bryant, Susan Paige Gilbert, Brittany Jessica Smith, Whittney Renae Smith, Cierra Nicole Gilbert and Jacob William Gilbert.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 9, 2013 in the chapel of Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Keith officiating, internment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 6-8P.M. Monday, April 8, 2013 in the Collins Funeral Home Chapel with a reception provided by the family.
