Curtis Hagwood, 87 of 1409 Soapstone Road, Ridgeway, Virginia departed this life Friday, April 12, 2013 at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, Martinsville, Virginia.
Curtis was born November 26, 1925 in Henry County, Virginia, a son of the late Abraham and Blanche Hagwood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Jesse, John, Paul, Stafford and June Hagwood.
He was educated at the Piedmont Training Institute. Later he served his country in the United States Army. After being honorable discharged from the military he returned home and was employed in various capacities; school bus driver, factory worker, construction worker. He retired from construction Local 423, moved to Columbus, Ohio and was employed by Anheuser Bush until his second retirement.
He was a member of Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio. There he faithful served in the Culinary Department. Returning to Martinsville, he joined the Saint Paul High Street Baptist Church. When he and his wife became residents of Henry County, they joined her home church, Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Curtis was a member of the Men’s Fellowship Ministry, the Culinary Committee, and the Men’s Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife, Jannie Hagwood of the home; one daughter, Leslie Hagwood of Greensboro, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Antario and Dontrae Hagwood and Jonathan Millner; one brother, Jewel Hagwood (Evanglia), of Martinsville, Virginia; one sister, Hilda Marshall of Columbus, Ohio; one brother-in-law, William Jones (Janie), of Axton, Virginia; a very special cousin, Edward Hairston of Martinsville, Virginia; extended family, Morris and Carolyn Berkley, Kristal and Marsha and great-grandson, Montana Lemon, all of Columbus Ohio; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Ridgeway, Virginia. Rev. Jesse D. Jones, Jr., officiating and Rev. William Shackleford, eulogizing. Interment will follow in the Carver Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
The family will receive friends during the visitation period (1:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) at the church.
