Martha Ruth Martin, 66, of 191 Cardinal Road, (Piedmont Estates) Martinsville, Va., passed away Monday, April 29, 2013, surrounded by her loving family and friends. After a thirty year battle with breast cancer, Martha is sick no more and now is an able-bodied person enjoying rewards promised by her Lord.
Martha was born October 16, 1946 to the late Ruben and Lealie Martin. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents William and Lula Martin and by her paternal grandparents, Abe and Parthenia Martin. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Fletcher D. Martin and James Ollie Martin.
Martha attended East Martinsville Elementary School and Albert Harris High School (Class of ’65). She was employed by E. I. DuPont from 1966-1994, as a spinning machine operator on “B” Shift. She was active in the DuPont Fire Brigade and Safety Committee. While employed, she also played softball for the “B” shift and later started bowling at which she excelled, winning numerous trophies.
Having experienced many illnesses in her life, Martha started volunteering with the Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad and became a First Responder, EMT, and Squad Sergeant. Later she became a lifetime member of the Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad.
Martha leaves to mourn her memories, her devoted daughter, Lealia B. Martin of Belews Creek, North Carolina. She also leaves a God-daughter, Tuesday N. Hairston and a grand-God daughter Danae Johnson. Blessed to be loved, eight siblings mourn her passing—Revs. Ruben (Ramona) Martin, Sr. Howard (Mabel) Martin, Mattie R. Freeman, Lula Price, Chauncey (Edith) Martin, Sr. and John Henry Martin, all of Martinsville, Va. Although not in Martinsville, phone calls from her sister, Amberette (Nelson) Hairston of Alexandria, Va., were received daily. She is also survived by an adopted sister, Berta Carter of Spencer, and host of friends and other relatives.
She was a member of Charity Christian Church where her brother Rev. Ruben H. Martin, Sr. pastors. Rev. Martin will also preside over services being held Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Wright Funeral Service Chapel at 1425 Greensboro Road, Martinsville, Va.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 12:00 noon until the funeral. The family will receive friends at other times at the home on 191 Cardinal Road (Piedmont Estates).
In remembrance of the 30 year battle she fought with breast cancer, it is requested that everyone wear something pink or a pink ribbon at her service.
