She was active in the DuPont Fire Brigade and Safety Committee. While employed, she also played softball for the “B” shift and later started bowling at which she excelled, winning numerous trophies.

Having experienced many illnesses in her life, Martha started volunteering with the Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad and became a First Responder, EMT, and Squad Sergeant. Later she became a lifetime member of the Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad.

Martha leaves to mourn her memories, her devoted daughter, Lealia B. Martin of Belews Creek, North Carolina. She also leaves a God-daughter, Tuesday N. Freeman, Lula Price, Chauncey (Edith) Martin, Sr. and John Henry Martin, all of Martinsville, Va. Although not in Martinsville, phone calls from her sister, Amberette (Nelson) Hairston of Alexandria, Va., were received daily. She is also survived by an adopted sister, Berta Carter of Spencer, and host of friends and other relatives.

She was a member of Charity Christian Church where her brother Rev. Ruben H. Martin, Sr. pastors. Rev. Martin will also preside over services being held Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Wright Funeral Service Chapel at 1425 Greensboro Road, Martinsville, Va.
