Kathryne T. King Martin Last Name

Kathryne T. King Martin, 80, of 445 Flatrock Drive, Martinsville, Virginia, passed from this life on Saturday, April 7, 2012 peacefully at her home.

Kathryne was born July 11, 1931, in Clarksville, Virginia, the fourth of five children born to Roy and Gracie King. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Rufus Martin; sister, Jean King Breedlove and brother, Robert Wayne King.

Kathryne, affectionately known as “Picky” by family and friends, dedicated her adult life to caring for others as mother and homemaker to her family as well as caregiver, babysitter and Granny to her very large extended family.  Her love and care earned her such names as Grandma Picky, Granny Goodness, Granny Kat, VT Granny, Granny-Ma, Elder Mama, Granny Girl, Mother Martin and many other terms of endearment.

She was a member of Inheritors Ministries where she found joy worshiping God, fellowshipping and encouraging others.  She accepted Christ at an early age and attended church in the Pittsylvania County area. In the late sixties she moved her membership to Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, which later became The Galilean House of Worship.  She served in many capacities there including Church Mother, Church Secretary, Golden Ministry leader, Sunday School & VBS teacher, usher, Kitchen Committee and sang in the choir. She also enjoyed working with the schools her children and grandchildren attended and attending both sports and academic activities in which they were involved.  She loved to cook, can, work in her flowers and quilt.

Many precious memories will be cherished by her seven children:  James O. Martin (Tanya) of Winston-Salem, NC;  Melvin D. Martin (Debra), Gracie Martin-Scales (Oscar), Elder David O. Martin (Denese), Rufus D. “Danny” Martin (Doretha), Glenda F. Martin, and Bobby W. Martin (Sharmane) all of Martinsville; 16 grandchildren: Latoya, Jessica and Jimmy Martin; Floyd (Marcia) and Brandy Martin, Martin, Julia, Razia, Tahira and Perwaiz Scales, Orion (Jennifer) and Cameron Martin, Teena (Timothy) Hobson & Leonard (Olympia) Smith, Bobby “BJ” and Courtney Martin; nine great-grandchildren: Jamie, Barak, Bashir, BiLanna, Blaze, TiaLasha, Timisha, Amari & Jaiden. Also surviving is brother, Leroy King (Marie) of Clarksville and sister, Clara King Smith of Danville; a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and the dear friends who adopted her as sister, mother, and grandmother.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at 11:00am on the grounds of the home with Elder David O. Martin officiating. (In case of inclement weather the funeral will be held at the funeral home). Interment will follow in the Martin Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 10, from 6:30-7:30pm at Bassett Funeral Services, and at other times at the home.
