AL WOODY Last Name

High Point, NC – William Alfred “Al” Woody, 66, passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 25, 2013 at Moses Cone Hospital.

He was born on August 9, 1946, in Henry County, VA to William Ben Woody and Estelle Joyce Woody. He was a 1964 graduate of Drewry Mason High School in Martinsville, and a 1968 graduate of Virginia Tech. On April 19, 1969, he married the love of his life, Nancy Lee Arnold. He began a sales career which enabled them to experience the history and food of numerous regions in Virginia, Louisiana, Alabama and North Carolina. Al’s love of cooking grew from these travels and experiences. He saw beauty in nature which he expressed in gardening especially growing tomatoes. He was a creative man who enjoyed crafting: stained glass sun catchers & lampshades, wood walking sticks, BBQ sauce and canned produce. Al & Nancy’s admiration of hand-crafted items made in the USA led to their opening Country Specialties, a unique store ahead of its time, in Greensboro in 1984. Al later worked for Lowes Home Improvements, as long as his health permitted.

In 2004, Al & Nancy moved to Trap Hill, NC to live in their dream log mountain home. Due to health reasons, they returned to the Triad (High Point) in 2008. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the 50+ club, delivered for Meals on Wheels, cooked for the youth & various events and established the church garden. Al was a loving and caring son, husband, father, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Nancy, and daughter, Erin E. Woody of the home; his mother, Estelle Woody of the home; his sister, Janet Rivas and her husband Michael of Richmond, VA; 3 nephews: Andrew and Nicholas Rivas, and Dr. Brian Woody; 2 nieces: Vickie Beyer and Susie Schaller; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Ronald Wayne Woody. A service celebrating Al’s life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 9, 2013, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor David Olson officiating. The family will see friends following the service in the church’s fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 1401 Heathcliff Road, High Point, NC 27262.
