  • for the cake:
  • 1 4-ounce package German’s Sweet Chocolate
  • 21?4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Coconut-Pecan Frosting

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1?2 cup butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 11?2 cups shredded coconut
  • 11?2 cups chopped pecans
for the cake:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease three 9-inch round cake pans.
Melt the chocolate by placing in a bowl in the microwave for 2 to 4 minutes, stirring several times. Cool the chocolate.
Stir together the flour, soda and salt; set aside. Cream the butter. Add the sugar gradually and cream for several minutes. Blend in the chocolate, eggs and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add the flour mixture in three parts, alternating with two parts buttermilk, beating on low speed after each addition until combined.

for the frosting:
Combine the milk, sugar, egg yolks and butter in a saucepan. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla, coconut and pecans. Let cool to spreading consistency before frosting cake.
