  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 TBS cornstarch
  • 3 TBS cocoa
  • 2 cups warm milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1â�„4 stick butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 baked pie shell
  • topping:
  • 3 egg whites
  • 6 TBS sugar
  • 1â�„2 tsp. cream of tartar
Mix together 1 cup sugar, corn starch, cocoa and milk and pour into double broiler over simmering water. Add yolks, butter and vanilla, stirring continually, until the mixture thickens. Pour into the pie shell.
Preheat oven on the broil setting. Beat egg whites, 6 TBS sugar and cream of tartar. Smooth over the top of the pie. Set pie in the top 1�3 of the oven, under the broiler, and bake until the meringue is brown.
