Beth Heal (left) had to hire a private investigator to help her locate her mother, Betty Brown of Martinsville (right), who gave her daughter up for adoption 57 years ago. Heal first contacted one of Brown’s other daughters, Velvyn Perdue Shirley of Leland, N.C., who told her mother that Heal had located her.
