Gas hike prompts changes
City fire, EMS

By DEBBIE HALL - Bulletin Staff Writer

Higher gas prices are prompting Martinsville Fire and EMS crews to consider altering their responses to nonemergency calls.

The rising cost of fuel “has hurt us tremendously,” said Kris Shrader, division chief of operations.

City Manager Clarence Monday added that the city’s cost of diesel has jumped 57 percent since January.

Emergency calls are, and will continue to be, answered as usual, Shrader said. But “we are considering altering our responses” to nonemergency calls.

For nonemergency fire calls, one emergency truck would be dispatched to the scene with lights and sirens, if needed, and others would follow at a normal pace, Shrader said.

Camp Idea gets kids thinking
By JENNIFER BEELER - Bulletin Intern

Hands-on learning is the best way for children to learn, said Steve Keyser, outreach educator for the New College Institute (NCI). With that in mind, the institute created Camp Idea, an entrepreneurship camp for youth held July 14 through July 18.

Nine area middle school-aged students participated in the camp, which was designed “in the hopes of retaining and fostering the entrepreneurial spirit that has existed in our region for generations,” Keyser explained.
