The historic Schottland House near uptown Martinsville, once targeted for demolition, has a new occupant.
Family Preservation Services Inc., which counsels students in area schools, is leasing the building at the corner of Starling Avenue and East Church Street from Heritage Properties One LLC, owned by Martinsville residents Dr. Mervyn and Virginia King.

State's graduation rate formula changing
City schools don't yet know how they'll fare under policy
A new way of figuring graduation rates among school districts statewide is on the horizon.
City school Superintendent Scott Kizner told the Martinsville School Board on Monday that he expects to find out how the city fares under the Virginia On-Time Graduation Rate within a couple of weeks.

| Mayor hopes new social services home is only months away

Martinsville Mayor Kathy Lawson said she hopes local officials can find a new home for Henry-Martinsville Social Services within a few months.
“We’re looking at all of our options,” Lawson said, adding she hopes the city and county can find the agency a new location “within 120 days.”

| BHS: Students learn from each other |

The day had been long enough already, and it could only get longer. As I treaded the lonely walk from lunch, I ran into my English teacher.
“Beth, I was just looking for you,” she stated. A feeling mixed with both anticipation and dread crept into my brain. The feelings, however, quickly dissipated as my teacher offered an opportunity that ultimately inspired and even changed preconceived ideas I had always held.
