WEDNESDAY’S WORD was “mien.” It means manner or bearing, especially as expressive of mood, attitude, or personality; demeanor. For her part, Lois soon learned to face her self-assurance and pride in her achievements in a modest mien.
TODAY’S WORD is “indelible.” It was part of his image, indelible as the ink stains on his shirt pocket.
During these difficult economic times, the SPCA is not only seeing more animals relinquished due to the expense of having pets, but they are receiving more requests for food to feed pets. In a news release, the SPCA says The Pet Pantry is very low in dry puppy and adult dog food and dry kitten and cat food, and it asks when you buy food for your pets to think about buying an extra bag for the SPCA. Other items on the wish list are paper towels, laundry detergent and bleach, window cleaner, used bath towels and dog collars.
The Henry County Bike Club will have a beginner bike ride at the Fieldale Walk/Bike Trail at 10 a.m. Saturday. There will be longer road rides planned for more experienced riders. All participants must wear helmets and should bring water and snacks. Those planning to ride the trail should bring a bicycle suitable for riding on gravel. Beginner rides will be scheduled the fourth Saturday of every month through the year. Walkers are also welcome.
The Henry-Martinsville Department of Social Services will close at 2:30 p.m. Friday for building maintenance. Business will resume at 8 a.m. Monday.
Anyone who would like to have a DVD of the recent appreciation ceremony for Martinsville High School basketball coach Troy Wells may contact the school business office at 403-5870. The cost is $15 each. Checks must be made payable to MHS.
The uptown Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday with fresh vegetables, USDA approved beef, lamb and goat, seafood, baked goods, and a variety of breads.
The National College Institute will hold a blood drive at the Martinsville campus from noon until 4 p.m. Monday. If you would like to make an appointment, contact Jill Jones at 632-5621 or jmjones@national-college.edu. Jones is the Career Center Director at National College. She said drop-ins are encouraged to donate to help the Red Cross replenish their blood supply.
A Rook Tournament will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, hosted by the Landmark Center in Stuart. The tournament is a socializing event for anyone who would like to play. Player supporters are welcome. Food will be available and prizes will be awarded. There is no cost. To register, call (276) 694-3050, ext. 4503.
The 25-year reunion for Bassett High School, Class of 1983, will be held Oct. 24 and 25. There are still a number of addresses needed for classmates.
