A wild pitch in the seventh inning allowed Roanoke Post 3 to score the winning run in a 2-1 win over Martinsville 42’s junior legion team Sunday at Hooker Field.

Roanoke took a 1-0 lead in the third, but Martinsville got it back in the bottom of the fourth when Daniel Pendleton, who reached on an error, came around to score the lone run for Post 42.

The two teams stayed in a 1-1 deadlock for two innings until Roanoke scored the game-winner in the top of the seventh.

Martinsville had just four hits on the night — one each by Kyle Ramsey, Elliott Underwood, Colin Cunningham, and Michael Martin. Colby Cunningham and Drew Fisher also reached on walks.

Fisher started the game on the mound for Martinsville, going six innings allowing just two hits and no earned runs. Fisher struck out two and walked four. Pendleton finished the game for Post 42, throwing one inning, also allowing two hits and one run with one strike out and one walk.

The two teams met up again for a second game Sunday night, but results were too late for publication.

Both Martinsville’s junior and senior legion teams will take time off for the Fourth of July holiday. The junior squad will return to the field on Monday, July 8, taking on Halifax Post 8 at Hooker Field at 7 p.m.

The senior legion squad will go on the road on Saturday, July 6 to Kiwanis Field in Salem to take on Christiansburg Post 59 in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
